About
locavore is a space devoted to digesting local organic food and all it’s off-shoots - from the tricky to the sublime. It unfolds in the tales of Andrea - yours truly, the author of these tales.
Why blog about local food? Having escaped the soul destroying aisles of Scottish supermarkets in the winter of 2006, I found inspiration in the food co-ops, community gardens and local food organizations of Toronto. When I moved north of the city I seized the opportunity to volunteer at a local organic farm, a foray that revealed an entirely new way of living.
A newbie to the world of tiny farming, foraging and local food and drink, I ran away again in August 2007 to the coastal lotusland of British Columbia, where entrenched local food culture exposed exciting new possibilities. After a spell in Vancouver, I was further inspired in Victoria by Fernwoodian neighbours who converted backyards into farms, and kept urban chickens and bees.
“The Dream” was to buy a small farm and develop an organic market garden. In February 2009 I bought a 4 acre farm with my (then) partner situated 10 minutes northeast of Guelph, Ontario (1 hour west of Toronto), and last June we staked our claim. In late January this year life shifted and Roddy and I went our separate ways. I struck off to cover the Olympics for work for a month and thought I’d move back to Vancouver. But when I returned to the farm in March it only took a few days to realize that this place - Gothic Cottage - is where I need to be. At least for now.
So now the tales that I stitch to this locavore quilt are written from a fresh perspective: that of a young lady on a cute little farm and the lovely, inspiring life and people that surround her.

Looking forward to your postings. Wish we could transport your climate to Southern Ontario!
Thanks Alan. After a long hiatus from this new blog (moves and new jobs for Roddy and I), locavore is finally rolling! Looking forward to hearing from the broad community of people who seek deeper meaning in what they consume.

Hi Sue - thanks for your comments. I’m glad you like Locavore! I’ve never thought of creating a t-shirt but if I do you’ll be the first to know : )
Hi Andrea,
I’m a community gardener in Richmond, BC. I hope it’s OK, but I’m adding a link to your blog from mine! Hope to read and learn more from you!
Best,
Casey Hrynkow
Dear Friend
Do I recall correctly that you covered a local cheese producer somewhere near Ingersoll? If so, could you point me to the article. kind regards, Dennis B
Hi Dennis: I haven’t come across one near Ingersoll, but I did write about RIver’s Edge Goat Dairy just near Arthur in Wellington County. The post is here: http://www.locavore.ca/?p=420. Let me know if you find one near you - especially if it’s goat or sheep cheese! Yum.
